Matthew Bourne生於英國，1982年考入Laban Centre for Movement and Dance，他亦是舞蹈劇場學文學士。1985-1986年加入Laban Centre's Transitions Dance Company演出。1999年結束舞蹈員生涯，並開始他的編舞事業。

 

Bourne於1987年創立Adventures in Motion Pictures，1995年編出現代版天鵝湖，此劇大受好評，亦於電影Billy Elliot演出一少片段。這出《天鵝湖》1995年11月在倫敦首演後引起巨大反響，使得Matthew Bourne獲得英國和美國的無數獎項，其中包括1999年百老匯托尼大獎中的最佳音樂劇導演、最佳編舞和最佳服裝。2002年亦把胡桃夾子改編成現代舞版。

 

2004年Bourne獲頒發O.B.E，2005年憑Mary Poppins贏得Olivier Award。
