Kenneth MacMillan生於蘇格蘭，自小跟隨Phyllis Adams習舞，其後獲獎學金到Sadler's Wells Ballet School習舞，畢業後加入Sadler's Wells Theatre Ballet。其間認識了Ninette de Valois，1948年他轉到Sadler's Wells Ballet，但四年後他重返Theatre Ballet。

 

 

1953年他開始為舞團編舞，其間編出多個作品，包括1962年的春之祭The Rita of Spring，1965年的Romeo and Juliet，1974年的Mono，1989年的The Prince of the Pagodas等等著名舞劇。

1966-69年擔任Ballet of the Deutsche Oper Berlin為該團總監，但當他48歲的時候，辭去總監一職，轉投The Royal Ballet擔任首席編舞一職。
