俄國出色芭蕾舞編導及演員，1819年3月11日生於馬賽，1910年6月2日逝世於俄國古爾袓夫。幼年時已開始習舞，1838年首次登台演出。1841年一度曾為舞蹈家艾爾斯勒的舞伴。在1847年應聘赴聖彼德堡瑪利亞劇院工作，1862年起任編舞，此後他為該劇院編導多齣舞劇，如《法老之女》、《唐吉訶德》、《舞姬》、《雷蒙達》、《天鵝湖》、《仲夏夜之夢》、《達米斯受難記》、《四季》等。他的作品獨舞技巧性強，群舞隊形整齊而又富於變化，整體境界有很強的討意。他還較早地把交響音樂的結構運用於芭蕾，為後世的交響芭蕾奠定了基礎。他在俄國半個多世紀，是他使得俄羅斯學派的舞台上產生了巴甫洛娃和尼金斯基這樣的天才，對俄羅斯舞派的形成作出了貢獻。

 

1858年起，他開始了在俄國的創作生涯。

 

1862年1月18日成功上演的芭蕾舞劇《法老的女兒》標誌著他編導生涯的煇煌序曲，近四百人的演員陣容創造了俄羅斯芭蕾史上盛況空前的奇蹟。他還發展及完善的古典芭蕾舞劇中雙人舞ABA的模式和性格舞的場面，使古典芭蕾舞劇在結構上有了自身的要求和完整的規范。
